The Rainbow

Elegant poetry book
Luciano Zeraschi writes poetry in Italian. To give his work a home, I designed a small poetry book for him with accompanying illustrations. I also created a simple website that provides space for new poems.
“L’arcobaleno e la sua gamma di colori” means “The rainbow and its spectrum of colours.” This title served as the starting point for the illustrations.

Coptic thread binding. I bound the second edition with red thread—somewhat more striking than the white one.

An idea at the beginning of the project: to have the poems begin with initials.

Luciano gave me complete freedom in the design process. Isn’t that exactly what every designer hopes for? Well—projects without constraints can certainly be interesting. But it is precisely this freedom that can make things challenging, as it becomes difficult to find a starting point without any clear guidelines or expectations. In this case, the evocative title at least provided a conceptual framework for the illustrations (“The Rainbow and Its Spectrum of Colours”). For the book design, type selection, and format, I chose a rather conservative approach, referencing the established visual language of poetry collections and lyric books. The proportions of the golden ratio were also applied throughout the layout. The booklet (or, as it is beautifully called in Italian, “libretto”) is now in its second edition, featuring refined typographic details and general layout improvements. I am also experimenting with different bookbinding techniques. The website is continuously updated with new poems.
